Stylish Monkey Boots
Boots are fantastic for everyday wear, as a style of shoe they are extremely adaptable and because they have such variations, there are types to suit most people’s fashion tastes. They should be a firm fixture in every woman’s clothes collections. Boots of every style are suitable to many fashions, but within this article, we will provide some guidance on the best styles to wear with boots.
Most boot styles suit a multitude of different outfits, the general rule-of-thumb is that the classic styles are more versatile than more up-to-date styles. For instance, monkey boots look great with all the latest fashion trends, from skinny jeans to boyfriend style jeans. For those of you who are not aware of the monkey boot style, they are fashioned on traditional military boots and are extremely popular amongst the offbeat fashionista.
Boots are suited to many types of dress, but the style of boot may vary depending on the particular style of clothes. Long skirts are most suited to boots with tall uppers, if you can see the top of the boots below the hem of the skirt when stood up; it is less attractive than if you cannot. Therefore, if you wear a lot of long skirts, then over-the-knee boots will suit your look best.
Over-the-knee boots also look fantastic with a short skirt, basically, with mini-skirts, the length of the boot is largely irrelevant; they look equally good when teamed with ankle boots as they do with thigh-high boots. When wearing ankle boots with a mini-skirt, then a funky pair of tights will look perfect. Wedge boots go particularly well with a mini-skirt if you choose not to wear tights, as they make the outfit more interesting to look at.
Skinny jeans look great with most types of boot, they add sophistication when tucked into a pair of tall boots, but create a relaxed look when tucked into shorter length boots, such as hiking boots. Almost every type of boot looks good with a pair of skinny jeans tucked in, from formal to informal, dance-club party to dinner party.
With taller boots, there are certain looks that should be avoided, for instance, baggy jeans are a big no-no, and they do not complement the figure in the first place, but have the aim of looking relaxed. Never tuck baggy jeans into a pair of tall boots. Tucking baggy jeans into a short pair of ugg-style boots is passable, but must be done with care as the look can seriously miss the mark. When worn wrongly, this look makes the thighs appear bigger than they are – something most women want to avoid at all costs; tucking trousers into boots only looks good on long, lean women, everyone else should avoid it. Even lean women need to steer clear of tucking trousers into knee-high and over-the-thighs boots.

Trials of the Monkey $9.99 “When Darwin called his second book The Descent of Man instead of The Ascent of Man he was thinking of his progeny.” So declares Darwin’s great-great grandson Matthew Chapman as he leaves behind his stressful career as a Hollywood screenwriter and travels to Dayton, Tennessee where in 1925 creationist opposition to the teaching of evolution in schools was played out in a famous legal drama, the Scopes Trial. The purpose of this journey is to see if opinions have changed in the seventy- five intervening years. A defiant atheist, Chapman is confronted not only by the fundamentalist beliefs that continue to banish the theory of evolution but by his own spiritual malaise as the outward journey becomes an inward quest, a tragicomic “accidental memoir”. “First there was Charles Darwin, two yards long and nobody’s fool. Then there was his son, my great-grandfather, Sir Francis Darwin, an eminent botanist. Then came my grandmother Frances, a modest poet who spent a considerable amount of time in rest-homes for depression From her issued my beloved mother, Clare, who was extremely short, failed to complete medical school, and eventually became an alcoholic. Then we get down to me. I’m in the movie business.” Trials of the Monkey combines travel writing and reportage, as Chapman records his encounters in the South, with history and the accidental memoir of a man full of mid-life doubts in a genre-breaking first book that is darkly funny, provocative and poignant. |

Byzantine Monkey $12.78 After many years apprenticing as a progressive jazz sideman, bassist John Hebert arrives as a leader with Byzantine Monkey, a title inspired by his wife, and the peculiar dualities of his Louisiana heritage merged with a contemporary living situation in New York City. These pieces are written for three challenging and inventive woodwind players in saxophonists Tony Malaby and Michael Attias, alongside flutist and bass clarinetist Adam Kolker. The music has an overall somber and winsome tone, saddened by circumstance but not at all unhappy or dour. Instead, there’s depth and substance to Hebert’s personalized concept toward original new music, shaded or accented, but not powered by his supple basslines, and the percussion musings of Satoshi Takeishi and drummer Nasheet Waits. There are some inferences to modern mainstream jazz, but it’s mostly a music straddling both composed and spontaneous improvisation, heady and heavy, but not in the strictest sense. An earthy Malaby, pungent Attias, and resonant Kolker somehow coalesce as one in tone-poem, Zen-like consciousness on many of these pieces, including the diffuse end-of-the-world mantra “Run for the Hills” sidled by clattering percussion, the solemn “Blind Pig,” and the similarly evinced, long-toned “Ciao Monkey.” In a tribute to Hebert’s mentor and former bandmate, the late Andrew Hill, “For A.H.” is a requiem/epilogue bass solo that leads to the saxes acting as pall bearers. “Acrid Landscape” sounds like several tales of deceit woven together in a 6/8 bass/bass clarinet ostinato, “Cajun Christmas” is more celebratory and optimistic courtesy of Kolker’s flute, and “Fez” and “Fez II” features either the percussionists working out in a 9/8 meter with definite Middle Eastern elements, or the saxes jamming in short-shout choruses. The opening track, “La Reine de la Salle” has a vocal sample of Odile Falcon, a Cajun folk artist that sets up an Albert Ayler church-ghost visage for the cage-rattling triad of reed players. Even the listener whose taste leads toward challenging music will want to listen to this recording more than once to glean all of the various expressionist layers extant. The reward is somewhat hidden deep inside this unique, absorbing, cryptic music, but it is definitely there. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Adam Kolker – Flute (Alto), Clarinet (Bass), Flute; John Hébert – Bass; Michaël Attias – Sax (Alto), Sax (Baritone); Nasheet Waits – Drums; Satoshi Takeishi – Percussion; Tony Malaby – Sax (Teno |

Spanking the Monkey $9.25 David O. Russell burst onto the scene with this challenging and controversial film about an introverted college student and the incestuous disaster of a summer that follows his freshman year. Ray Aibelli (Jeremy Davies) returns home for what is supposed to be a short visit with his family prior to leaving for Washington D.C., where he will intern in the surgeon general’s office. Ray’s plans are quickly scuttled by his acerbic and controlling father (Benjamin Hendrickson), a salesman leaving on an extended business trip, who strong-arms Ray into caring for his depressed mother (Alberta Watson) while she recovers from torn ligaments in her leg. Gently prodding his mother to begin using crutches so he will no longer have to change her bedpans and carry her about the house, and so he can still arrive belatedly for the internship, Ray discovers that his mother is not only physically but emotionally dependent on his presence. She begins making inappropriately tender displays of her affection for him, which only become more complicated when he has to rub lotion underneath her cast to soothe her itches. As that relationship grows increasingly fuzzy, Ray must also deal with the sputtering advances of a neighborhood high school girl (Carla Gallo) and the overly aggressive chiding of his estranged group of friends. Russell both scripted and directed this critically acclaimed debut, which courted controversy by following the mother-son relationship into uncomfortably frank and off-limits territory. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi |

Mark Applebaum: Sock Monkey $11.98 By his own account, Stanford University’s Mark Applebaum has paid his scholarly debts, crossed his t’s and dotted his i’s, gotten a grip on the administrative aspect of teaching, and set himself on the university-bred agenda. Applebaum’s earlier music reflects more directly his involvement in academia, and, not surprisingly, he racked up a number of awards and other accolades for his achievements in such areas about which he no longer cares very much. While his situation as a university professor continues much as it has, Applebaum’s music has gone off the rails, intersected at some point by restlessness, the creative spirit, developments in music outside academe, and a sense of humor. He builds electro-acoustic instruments, works as a jazz pianist, and plays in a piano duet with his father Robert Applebaum, has written orchestral music, is an enthusiastic proponent of so-called “Plunderphonics,” fulfilled a number of commissions, and has released a number of recordings on the Innova and Tzadik labels. Innova’s Sock Monkey is an assemblage of relatively short pieces that touches on various aspects of Applebaum’s creativity, ranging from the most structured to the most ephemeral. The 12 compositions here range from the orchestral title work, Sock Monkey, to Entre Funérailles, realized here for solo trumpet. Magnetic North, composed to commission from the Meridian Arts Ensemble, features an instrument/invention called the “Mousketier,” which Applebaum describes as “made of junk, hardware, and found objects” and played in various ways. The three pieces entitled Theme in Search of Variations feature three different ensembles — a percussion trio, the ensembles sfSound, and Beta Collide — with Applebaum providing the game plan, a theme to which his interpreters respond in the form of variations. A similar game structure characterizes the three pieces titled Martian Anthropology. The Composer’s Middle Period is realized from a graphic score; by contrast, Sock Monkey is a standard, full orchestral score. Of this widely varied program, On the Nature of the Modern Age has the loosest construct of all the pieces, yet feels the most organic. It is basically an informed improvisation for samples and piano duo, written in memory of one of Applebaum’s teachers, composer John Silber, and leaves the most distinct and determinate impression of all the music here. Sock Monkey, to some extent stimulated by the exuberant running around of Applebaum’s toddler while he was composing it, is also immediate, lighthearted, and close to being cinematic. Magnetic North is rather on the fence between determinate and exploratory; its relative success in approximating a Spike Jonesian texture out of pseudo-serial gestures is partly due to the naturally high-spirited and infectious playing of the Meridian Arts Ensemble. The pieces based out of game theory and employing more experimental, structural ideas seem less successful merely as they leave less of an impression; if there |
